Tonda Francescana® or Nocciotonda is a variety released in 2012 by the University of Perugia as an industrial cultivar.

It was born in the ‘80s with the aim of improving industrial processes (such as high productivity, yield to shelling and medium vigor), while maintaining excellent organoleptic qualities.

It is characterized by elements such as: resistance, high productivity and adaptability to the environment and cultivation.

It comes from a hybridization between Tonda gentile Romana and Tonda di Giffoni and it is suitable for the confectionery industry and it has a long retention period. Since it is a hybrid, it is stronger and more productive than a pure variety.

The license for production and marketing was given by the University of Perugia to the Foundation for Agricultural Education in Perugia.


High vigor, very early entry into production, high productivity and semi erect posture.


Globular shape, light brown color.


Late for both male and female. Recommended pollinators are Nocchione, Camponica, Daria, Mortarella and Tonda Gentile.


The taste is intense with a noticeable sense of sweetness, medium / high aromatic intensity.
